Rewarding dogs for being quiet in their crate. You can place the Treat&train in the crate, or you can take the bowl off and place it on top of a wire crate or on the side of a plastic crate. Now just wait out any barking and then reward when your dog's quiet. Make sure to reward her frequently enough to keep her quiet i.e. before she barks again) or you may accidentally train her to bark. (Watch the DVD for step by step instructions on crate training and training quiet behavior.

The entire down-stay with distractions game is about desensitization and counter-conditioning. It starts with classical counter-conditioning and then progresses to operant counter-conditioning.


Owners learn the concepts of positive reinforcement and train their dogs to automatically say "please" by sitting for everything they want, including attention and petting, getting their leash on and going out the door. Instead of running around wildly, dogs learn to sit calmly even when maximally excited because that's the only way they get what they want.
